Below are a selection of frequently asked questions regarding both South Dakota Hunting as well as a lising of advertising questions for those South Dakota hunting operations wishing to gain exposure on South Dakota's #1 Pheasant hunting online center.
What are the dates for the upcoming Seasons?
The 2007-08 Pheasant Season, South Dakota's most notorious game dates, have been set for October 20, 2007 - January 8, 2008. Final dates are released each April with the complete list of opening and closing dates for all of South Dakota's game. Where can I get a license?
With the hunting industry having a major impact on the economy here in South Dakota, many businesses offer the ability to purchase a license. If you plan to use a guide service, you may want to check with them to see if they either include your license in their fees, or have them available on site. What are the hunting hours?
Depending on the game that you wish to hunt, and the time of the season, the hours vary. Pheasant season runs on two time structures: From opening day through the first 2 weeks, the season starts at 12:00 and ends at sunset. From October 29th - December 31st, the start time is 10:00 am until sunset.
What are the limits/regulations?
The daily limit for Pheasants in SD is 3/day per shooter. If you are hunting a preserve, the limits vary and you will have to discuss the limit with the preserve owner. They are typically the same as state regulations, with additional birds available for an extra fee. The maximum birds per day per hunter is 15.
What is the weather like?
This is a question that is very hard to predict. SD is known for it's weather and that in itself adds challenge to the hunting experience. We have seasons where you could hunt in a t-shirt and light field pants and other years it has been an arctic tundra. The best bet for this question is watch the weather.
When is non-toxic ammunition (steel) required?
Non-toxic ammunition such as steel, bismuth, and tungsten, are required on the following:
- State Parks and Recreation Areas and Lakeside Use Areas
- U.S. ARMY Corps of Engineers land
- Bureau of Reclamation land managed by Game, Fish and Parks
- Federal Waterfowl Production Areas and National Wildlife Refuges
- State Water Access Areas
- National Waterfowl Refuges
- State Game Production Areas

What equipment should I bring?
Just like any other state, the weather plays a vital role in the equipment you will need to bring for your SD hunt. To be sure you have everything you need, check out our Equipment Check List.
Should I bring my dog?
Of course, no hunting trip is complete without man's best friend! If you are concerned with the dog's abilities, most hunting locations have excellent dogs for you hunt over.
Are the public areas good to hunt?
We feel that the public areas have gotten a bad rap over the years with the increase in non-resident hunters. These areas offer excellent hunting on opening weekend of pheasant season if you are one of the first groups to hunt them. With the vast numbers on opening weekend, these areas get a vigorous workout. If you find yourself seeking a public area, wait until late afternoon, when the birds are looking to return to roost. With the excellent cover that these areas offer, bird return after a long day of outwitting their opponents. Once again, early season make sure you are one of the first to walk the area, or wait until late afternoon for the return to roost. Following these steps will ensure great hunting on public land.
When is the best time of the season to hunt?
If you do not mind the vast number of hunters that the first two weeks of pheasant season brings, we highly encourage participating in this annual event. If you are looking for excellent hunting with out the hectic events of opening weekend, we recommend visiting the state in November or even mid December. The birds are always here, and we feel that late season hunts provide more intelligent birds for you to track; if you can stand the weather! Overall as a native South Dakotan, I enjoy the later season more than the popular opening weekend. The November/December hunts offer a natural beauty in the land and the test the true skills of the hunter on wiser birds and with a bit more clothing, the colder temps are easily forgotten.
