About South Dakota Mt. Lion Hunting

South Dakota began allowing
resident only mountain lion hunting in 2005 and has had a season every year since. In the years leading up to 2005, mountain lions were increasing in number and ranging out of the Black Hills.
A statewide season offers an unlimited number of licenses. In addition, Custer State Park hosts a separate mountain lion season with
10 licenses issued by lottery drawing. An individual may apply for both licenses, however they are limited to the taking of one mountain lion for the season.
The application form includes both seasons. There is a deadline for Custer State Park applications and the statewide license is sold throughout the season.
Season Dates:
- Statewide - Jan. 1, 2012 -
- Custer State Park - Jan. 1, 2012 - Mar. 31, 2012, or ends with quota
